The century old Village of Mayo is located near the confluence of the Mayo and Stewart rivers in the heart of the Yukon. It is situated 406 kilometers northeast of Whitehorse, traveling north on the Klondike Highway and then east on the Silver Trail highway. Dawson City is 235 km west of Mayo travelling west from Stewart Crossing on the Klondike Highway.
It lies within the traditional territory of the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun (FNNND). Mayo was established in 1903 as a service center and port for the Keno mining district, where silver, zinc and lead ores were transported from Elsa, loaded onto sternwheelers in Mayo and shipped to Whitehorse.
An all-weather road linking Mayo with Whitehorse was completed in 1950, including the Silver Trail, a scenic highway that begins at Stewart Crossing on the Klondike Highway, travels through Mayo and leads to the mining camp at Elsa and the unincorporated community of Keno.
This century old village and surronding area has a current population of 446 (2012).
Today, Mayo is a thriving regional centre that is centered around mining, exploration, tourism, outfitting and adventure tours, and is the staging point for backcountry wilderness trips into the Peel River Watershed.
