Watson Lake is proud of the rich Aboriginal heritage of the Liard First Nation, who form part of the Kaska Dena Council.
The Kaska people are actively involved in cultural revival, teaching children their history, language, and traditional practices. The First Nation supports heritage development, language classes, and elder involvement in healing programs and land-based activities.
Watson Lake is renowned for its Sign Post Forest, a vast collection of signs from all over the world. Legend suggests that a homesick, lonesome soldier put up the first sign during the building of the Alaska Highway in 1942.
The Northern Lights Centre, built in 1996, celebrates the amazing phenomena known as the 'Northern Lights' or 'Aurora borealis'. It boasts state-of-the-art panoramic video and surround-sound systems, and interactive displays that explain the science and folklore of the Northern Lights.
The Visitors Interpretive Center provides a look at the fascinating history surrounding the building of the Alaska Highway. An audio-visual presentation, shown in the sixty-seat theater, brings to life the hardships and the adventure of this road building effort.
