We accelerate the progress of innovative nonprofits by connecting them to the best of Google
Who we are
Since 2005, Google.org has worked to extend the reach of nonprofit innovators and connect them with a unique blend of support that includes funding, tools, and volunteers from around Google. These innovators are the believers-turned-doers who have made the biggest impact on the communities they represent, and whose work has the potential to produce meaningful change that can scale. Though each nonprofit’s project poses a fresh challenge, we ask the same question every time: “How can we bring the best of Google to power their work and accelerate their progress?”
How we work
We find innovative nonprofits
We identify nonprofits using technology and innovation to tackle complex global challenges. While every project is different, these organizations tend to have a few things in common.
Address inequities
We look for nonprofit innovators who understand the needs of marginalized and vulnerable populations in their own communities– and around the world. These innovators create new and unexpected solutions to address inequities.
Solve like engineers
When ideas aren’t backed by data and research, impact is harder to achieve and measure. We look for teams that break down large problems into small ones, and then test and iterate solutions. They share our belief that technology and innovation can accelerate change across the nonprofit sector.
Bring change to everyone
The best ideas positively impact as many people as possible. We look for leaders who have bold, ambitious ideas. They open source their technology. They build models with the potential to scale. They speak publicly about their successes and failures so that others can learn and benefit.
And then we build the right toolkit
We help grantees scope projects to ensure they have the resources to sustain and scale. In addition to funding, we connect our grantees to tools, products, and technical expertise from Google volunteers that accelerate their progress.
Funding
Each year, we give over $100 million in grants to support breakthrough innovation and technology with the potential to scale, and as of 2017, we set a goal to award $1 billion in grants by the end of 2022.
Expertise
Each year, Google volunteers spend more than 200,000 hours with nonprofits—bringing their passion and engineering expertise to accelerate progress. Our employees have a 5 year goal to contribute 1 million volunteer hours.
In addition to short term volunteer engagements, the Google.org Fellowship is a pro bono program that matches Googlers with Google.org grantees for up to six months on full-time technical projects. Fellows work alongside the nonprofit’s staff to build solutions, working as a team to ensure that the work has a sustained and lasting impact.
Technology
We give free products and services designed to serve the unique needs of nonprofits and amplify their impact.

Google.org Impact Challenge
Every year, we travel to different regions to ask communities and nonprofit innovators: How would you use technology to build a better world? Then, we ask local expert judges and the public to select the nonprofits with the most potential.
