Karen Hudson, QC

Ms. Hudson was appointed Deputy Minister of Justice and Deputy Attorney General on Aug. 2 2016.

She has practiced law in Nova Scotia for more than 30 years, serving most recently as Executive Director of Nova Scotia Legal Aid Commission, a position she held since 2009. Ms. Hudson led a revitalization of the organization, expanding its service to be more inclusive of, and responsive to those needing legal help in the province. Under her leadership, the organization gained recognition for its diversity and collaborative community outreach work.

Ms. Hudson has organized and presented at various national legal conferences for lawyers, judges and police with a focus on making justice more accessible. She has also served as chair of the National Association of Legal Aid Plans of Canada. She has sat on various boards including those focused on increasing opportunity for those living with the least opportunity.

As Deputy Minister, Ms Hudson has responsibility for the department's day-to-day operations, providing strategic advice on policy and programs, as well as ensuring the smooth operation of the Justice system, including court services, corrections, policing, public safety and security, legal services. As Deputy-Attorney General, she provides advice to the government on legal matters.

Ms. Hudson, who graduated from Dalhousie Law School in 1985, and her husband, Mark Knox, QC, have two sons.
