AMMI Canada wishes to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of our members, many of whom have been inducted as members of the Order of Canada. This achievement is given to individuals for their “outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.”[1] Dr. Thomas Marrie, Dean of Medicine at Dalhousie University, was named a Member of the Order of Canada in November 2014. Members are recognized for “outstanding contributions at the local or regional level or in a special field of activity.”[2] Dr. Marrie was honoured “for his contributions as an expert in infectious diseases, as a medical educator, and as Dean of Medicine for both Dalhousie University and the University of Alberta.”[3] Dr. Marrie joins other AMMI Canada members in the esteemed ranks as recipients of the Order of Canada: |

In December 2012, Dr. David Scheifele was honoured as a Member of the Order of Canada. Dr. Scheifele was recognized for his work improving healthcare and reducing infectious diseases in children. Dr. Scheifele was honoured for his “leadership and collaborative research,” which has “positioned Canada at the leading edge of vaccine use and safety.”[4] Dr. Scheifele, a longstanding AMMI Canada member, holds many roles as Senior Clinician Scientist at the Child and Family Research Institute (CFRI), Director of the Vaccine Evaluation Center at CFRI, Professor in the Division of Infectious and Immunological Diseases in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of British Columbia.
Dr. Michel G. Bergeron was honoured as a Member of the Order of Canada in May 2010 in recognition “for his contributions to the area of microbiology, especially for his for research on infectious diseases and for his development of ultra-fast diagnostic testing for bacterial infections.”[5] Dr. Bergeron is described as a “mentor and role model for young scientists.”[6] Dr. Bergeron is a founding member and former President of the Canadian Association of Medical Microbiology (CAMM) and former President of the Canadian Infectious Diseases Society (CIDS) – both of which are the predecessors to AMMI Canada. He currently holds the roles of Director and Founder of the Centre de recherche en infectiologie de l’Université Laval.
