All PNAS articles are free within 6 months of publication. Authors who choose the open access option can have their articles made available without cost to the reader immediately upon publication. The following content is freely available upon publication:
- Front Matter magazine content
- Colloquia
- Special Features
- PNAS Classics
- Editorials
- In This Issue article summaries
- Significance Statements
- Supporting information
- References
- Corrections and retractions
Access to the full text of all other research papers for the first 6 months of publication is available to subscribing institutions and NAS members.
Open access articles are published under a nonexclusive License to Publish and distributed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives (CC BY-NC-ND) license or under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) license for authors whose funders or institutions require it. Some funders and institutions have explicit open access and license requirements that may conflict with the PNAS standard license. Authors are advised to confirm these requirements with their funding or institutional representatives to ensure compliance or to request policy waivers. Changes to license selections, or open access status, after publication may not be possible.
Fees. Corresponding authors from institutions with current-year site licenses may pay a discounted open access fee of $1,300 (compared to our regular fee of $1,700) for a CC BY-NC-ND license. A CC BY license is available for authors whose funders or institutions require it, for a fee of $2,200.
PNAS Satisfies Funder Mandates for Open Access
PNAS satisfies green open access requirements, is compliant with the NIH Public Access Policy, and extends access even further. PNAS automatically deposits the final, published version of all its content, regardless of funding, in PubMed Central (PMC) and makes it free at both PMC and PNAS within 6 months of publication. PNAS offers a CC BY-NC-ND option to everyone and a CC BY option to authors whose funders or institutions require it.
Authors may deposit their accepted manuscript in their funding body’s archive or designated noncommercial institutional repository, under the same license as the published article, provided that a link to the article in PNAS is included. Authors may request public access 6 months after publication, or immediately on publication if the PNAS open access option was chosen.
Authors are not required to deposit their manuscripts in PMC because PNAS will automatically deposit the final published version for public release within 6 months of issue publication.
Please see our Editorial and licenses page for details.
Free Access in Developing Countries
PNAS provides free and immediate online access to PNAS content in the developing world. PNAS is committed to providing broad access to current scientific research across many fields and to fostering globalization of research tools and advances.
In light of the current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which represents a serious threat to public health, PNAS will make relevant content free to access. Any data or preprints shared ahead of submission of research articles relevant to the outbreak will not preempt publication in the journal. Please read the full statement here.
