Time and language of the civil union ceremony

When do you want to form your civil union? Depending on the place you have chosen, there may be some time restrictions.

Civil union at the courthouse

If you and your intended spouse want to form your civil union at the courthouse, the ceremony must take place between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on a day on which hearings are held, in other words during normal courthouse hours.

This also means that you will not be able to organize the ceremony, for example, on a Sunday or on January 1.

During your interview, the officiant will confirm the date and time of the ceremony.

Civil union at another place

If you choose to form a civil union at another venue, the marriage must take place between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. on the day you choose. However, if the celebrant is a court clerk or deputy clerk, the time restrictions are the same as at a courthouse.

During your interview, the officiant will settle the date and time of the ceremony with you.

Language of the ceremony

The officiant must perform the ceremony in French or English.

You and your intended spouse may each choose to respond in either French or English. If one of you does not understand either language, the officiant will ask you to ensure that an interpreter is present.
