End of parental authority

As the parent of a child, you are entitled and, in fact, required to exercise parental authority.

Parental authority ends when:

• your child reaches full age (at his or her 18th birthday);
• your child, while not yet of full age, is emancipated:
  • by marriage,
  • by a court decision;

• the court deprives you of parental authority.

Emancipation gives the minor greater autonomy by allowing them to accomplish acts they could not previously accomplish.

Respect for parental authority

Children owe their parents respect and remain under their authority until they reach full age (18 years) or are emancipated. An unemancipated minor may not leave home without the consent of the person with parental authority.
