Representing yourself in court
If you are one of the parties in a court case but not sure about whether to hire a lawyer, you are generally entitled to represent yourself in court. This applies, for example, if you are:
- the plaintiff or defendant in a civil or family case;
- the accused in a criminal case.
The judicial process in criminal cases
If you have been charged with a crime, your case will be tried to determine if you are guilty or innocent of the crime.
Even though you have been charged, you are presumed to be innocent until found guilty.
