Register of Letters Patent for Land

In some situations you may need information on property or land in the domain of the State, for example to:

• buy it;
• sell it;
• modify the natural resource rights granted on public land by a government department or body for the purposes of:
  • agriculture;
  • forestry;
  • fishing;
  • mining.

In such a case you will need to consult the Register of Letters Patent for Land.

This public register contains all the letters patent for land issued by the Minister of Justice, under the Great Seal of Québec, to individuals, organizations or enterprises that have:

• purchased a piece of public land and the infrastructures located on it, or;
• obtained a piece of public land, free of charge, along with the infrastructures located on it, for a purpose of public utility.

However, the register provides access only to excerpts from letters patent for land issued on or after January 1, 2009. To view letters patent issued as early as 1788, you must request a certified copy of the letters patent.
