This learning playlist offers insights into the origins of class inequality in the US. Episodes in the playlist include an exploration of how class inequality and race impacted the development of US housing projects in the post WW2 era; how class shaped the development of the American public school system in the 20th century; and how these same social structures impacted the rise of private prisons. The series blends historical narratives with social science and cultural criticism to answer these pressing questions. The episodes are organized into three subfields, with each section containing 2 videos. “Justice and Class” covers the topics of racial passing and the rise of private prisons, two phenomena that trace their roots back to US racial slavery in the 19th century. The episodes on “Public Services and Class” look at two forms of government spending (public housing and arts funding) that arose in the 20th century and they both have their roots in providing government relief to poor and working class citizens. And “Education and Class” looks at two important questions in education today: the rising cost of college tuition and the need for accessible public libraries. Viewed in order, the learning playlist covers a chronology that spans from the early 19th to 21st century.
