The Organization

The Centre for Trade Policy and Law (CTPL) is Canada’s premier trade policy and trade negotiations capacity building institution. We help governments around the world in the design and implementation of their respective international trade strategies, including advising senior trade officials on how to prepare for and execute effective free trade agreement negotiations. We specialize in policy-relevant analysis, expertise and support. CTPL maintains a small core staff in the Ottawa-based office, while drawing on an extensive roster of experts for specific projects. We combine the practical experience of former trade negotiators, diplomats and technical specialists and the perspective of policy-oriented academics from our two sponsoring institutions, the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs at Carleton University (www.carleton.ca/npsia) and the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa (http://www.commonlaw.uottawa.ca). We’ve worked in all regions of the world, and in more than 50 countries since we were established in 1989.
