Cooperative platooning is when a number of trucks or other vehicles equipped with driving support systems and vehicle-to-vehicle communications are driven together as a grouping of vehicles. The technology has the potential to improve traffic flows while driving economic growth and investment.
Connected Vehicle technology is advancing quickly, and Ontario's goal is to be a leader in the advancement, deployment and adoption of innovative connected and automated vehicle technologies. On January 1, 2019 Ontario launched a pilot program to allow the testing of cooperative truck platooning with a driver present in each vehicle, under specific conditions, along specified routes.
Who Can Participate
Applicants to the pilot may include: carriers, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), technology providers, Academic or Research Institutions, and manufacturers of parts, systems, equipment or components for automated driving systems. This includes manufacturers and software developers of advance driver assistance systems (ADAS) as well as other manufacturers of equipment and parts for heavy trucks.
