Population growth

Ontario’s population reached 14,789,778 on April 1, 2021, with a increase of 34,567 people during the first quarter of 2021. This compares to an increase of 34,422 in the same quarter of the previous year.

Births and deaths

There were 34,608 births during the first quarter of 2021, an increase of 0.9% from the same quarter of 2020. The number of deaths increased by 5.3% to reach 33,196.

Natural increase (births minus deaths) was 1,412 in the quarter, down from 2,777 in the same quarter of 2020.

International migration

Immigration to Ontario was 34,983 in the quarter, up from 32,290 in the same quarter of 2020. Ontario received 49.6% of all immigrants to Canada in the quarter, an increase from 46.7% in the same quarter of 2020. Over the 12 months to March 31, Ontario received 85,674 immigrants, down sharply from 154,543 during the previous year.

There were 4,421 emigrants from Ontario in the first quarter, up from 2,281 during the same quarter of the previous year. Ontario accounted for 46.7% of all emigration from Canada in the quarter.

The number of non-permanent residents in Ontario (NPRsi.e. foreign students, visa workers and refugee claimants) increased by 8,222 to about 591,000 in the quarter.

Overall, there was a net international migration gain of 38,784 in the first quarter, up from a net gain of 33,708 in the same quarter of 2020.

Interprovincial migration

In the first quarter of 2021, Ontario had a net outflow of 5,629 people to the rest of Canada, compared to a net outflow of 2,063 people in the same quarter of 2020. Ontario experienced net gains in its exchanges with 3 of the 12 other provinces and territories, with the largest net gains from Saskatchewan (659) and Manitoba (407). The largest net losses were to British Columbia (−2,730) and Nova Scotia (−1,545). Over the 12 months to March 31, Ontario’s total net interprovincial migration outflow was 7,054, compared to a net inflow of 1,193 during the previous year.

Year-over-year growth

Over the 12 months to March 31, Ontario’s population grew by 66,281 or 0.5%, lower than growth of 256,335 (1.8%) during the previous year. Among the provinces, Ontario had the fifth fastest population growth rate, after Prince Edward Island (0.8%), British Columbia (0.6%), Alberta (0.6%) and Nova Scotia (0.5%). Canada’s population grew at a rate of 0.4% over the period.
