Replace a lost, stolen or damaged driver’s licence

Overview

You can replace a lost, stolen or damaged licence at ServiceOntario. A fee of $35.75 will be collected.

You will need to bring a personal identification document (verifying your name, date of birth and signature).

You will be given a temporary driver’s licence and your new driver’s licence will arrive in the mail within 4 to 6 weeks.

If you are outside Ontario

Temporary replacement licence

You can get a one-time, temporary driver’s licence mailed to you, if your driver’s licence is valid (not cancelled or suspended).

A temporary licence is only valid for a fixed period of time.

You need to visit a ServiceOntario centre, when you return to Ontario, to replace the temporary licence with a new driver’s licence.

If you will be away 6+ months

You could be eligible to get a replacement with the current photograph and expiry date, if your driver’s licence is valid (not cancelled or suspended).

$35.75 (no charge for postage/mailing)

• certified cheque or money order payable to: Minister of Finance (Canadian bank accounts only)
• Visa or Mastercard

If paying by credit card

You need to provide a signed and dated letter of authorization with the:

• name of the card holder
• card type (Visa or Mastercard)
• card number
• expiry date (month and year)
• reason (e.g., driver’s licence replacement)
• amount to be charged

Get a replacement licence

To get a replacement mailed to you, please provide a signed letter with:

• your driver’s licence number (or your full name as it appeared on the licence and your date of birth, if you do not know your driver’s licence number)
• the length of time you will be away
• your out-of-province mailing address, telephone number and/or email address
