Indigenous Education Strategy
Ontario's Indigenous Education Strategy is supporting First Nation, Métis and Inuit students to achieve their full potential. The Ministry of Education is committed to improving Indigenous education in Ontario, improving student achievement and well-being, and closing the achievement gap between Indigenous students and all students.
This strategy has been designed to improve opportunities for First Nation, Métis and Inuit students, to increase the knowledge and awareness of all students about Indigenous histories, cultures and perspectives and contributions.

Reciprocal Education Approach (REA)
The REA is designed to put the learning needs of First Nation students first, by improving access to education in Ontario.
Through the REA, eligible First Nation students and their families will be supported by a consistent and transparent process when choosing where they wish to study – whether it be at a provincially-funded school, or a First Nation or federally-operated school.
This approach was developed in partnership with First Nations and school boards and came into effect on September 1, 2019.

Existing Education Service Agreements / Reverse Education Service Agreements
- Existing Agreements (Education Services Agreements or Reverse Education Services Agreements that were entered into prior to September 1, 2019 and have not expired or been terminated) may remain in effect until the agreement expires or the agreement is terminated.
- Any existing RESAs will be subject to the condition that the base fee that is paid to the First Nation entity must be at least the fee calculated in accordance with the reciprocal base fee formula set out in regulation.
- Any existing ESAs will be subject to the condition that the fee in the annual Fees regulation applies (e.g. the fee set out in section 3 of O. Reg. 278/19 (Calculation of Fees for Pupils for the 2019-2020 School Board Fiscal Year)).
