Capital Investments – Modernizing Ontario's Schools and Child Care Spaces

Ontario is committed to providing school boards with the resources they need to build and maintain modern classrooms and child care centres across the province.

Our government has committed to over $12 billion in capital grants over 10 years to support large-scale school-based capital projects, including new child care spaces.

For the 2020-21 school year, $550 million in investments will fund new schools and additions to address accommodation pressures, support school consolidations, replace schools in poor condition, provide accommodation to French language students and expand licensed child care availability in schools.

School Renewal Funding

For the 2020-21 school year, the Ministry of Education will continue to invest $1.4 billion in funding to support the repair and renewal of school facilities. This includes:

  • School Condition Improvement (SCI): allowing boards to revitalize and renew aging building components that have exceeded, or will exceed, their useful life.
  • School Renewal Allocation (SRA): allowing boards to address the renewal needs of their schools and undertake capital improvements to older buildings.

Investments in school renewal will allow school boards to continue to address facility condition, provide healthy and safe learning environments, and address energy efficiency and accessibility requirements of their school facilities.

Child Care Capital

Ontario will commit up to $1 billion over five years to create up to 30,000 licensed child care spaces in schools, including up to 10,000 spaces in schools. These school-based child care settings will provide safe learning environments for children and offer them the opportunity to grow in a familiar environment.
