Message from the Minister

What a difference a year makes. In last year’s Fishing Regulations Summary, I wrote about the value of fishing as a pastime, and about the many incredible angling opportunities offered across our beautiful province. Of course, these things remain true today, but we live in a world that has changed dramatically over the last 12 months.

For many Ontarians — myself included — fishing has always meant quality time with friends and family. During these uncertain times, fishing is a perfect respite, an ideal way to reconnect with nature and in a physically distanced way with others. We asked Ontarians what fishing meant to them during these unprecedented times, and we heard many heart-warming replies. Whether it’s the pure joy of seeing a young person catch their first fish, the simple peace and relaxation of being out on the water, or the relief of being far away from cell service, it’s very clear that Ontarians have discovered a newfound appreciation for this time-honoured pastime.

And the numbers show it, too. Last summer, resident fishing licence sales increased significantly. The fact is, fishing is an accessible and affordable family activity — and it’s just perfect for getting away from it all. Our government is delighted to see interest in angling increasing by such an impressive degree. It’s never been more important to find peace, relaxation, and opportunities for quality family time, and recreational fishing provides this.

We are, of course, still living with COVID-19, and need to take all necessary precautions to stop the spread. I am very appreciative of the efforts made by Ontario anglers to fish in a safe manner. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) is encouraging Ontarians to purchase their licences online and to plan their fishing trips using the Fish ON-Line digital resource.

I applaud the dedication of staff at MNRF, who have continued to provide critical services during these challenging times. Most stocking, assessment, and research activities went ahead as planned, with strict protocols in place to ensure that staff and the public were safe.

In the coming year, I encourage Ontarians to continue to take advantage of our province’s world-class lakes and rivers, and the opportunities they offer for adventure, relaxation, and family togetherness. And of course, please adhere to any of the public health guidelines to keep you, your family and others safe so that everyone can enjoy Ontario’s angling opportunities in the future.

Our government is excited to proceed with a number of updates to Ontario’s fishing regulations, including offering a new spring catch-and-release season for bass in Fisheries Management Zone 20. Please take some time to review the regulations listed in this summary before heading out fishing.

Thank you and – keep safe!
