Renew an expired driver’s licence
Find out if you’re still eligible to renew your driver’s licence online, or if you need to visit a DriveTest or ServiceOntario centre.
What you need to know before you renew
You may be eligible to renew online if your driver’s licence is expired or cancelled.
We are reinstating renewal requirements for driver, vehicle and carrier products and services that expired on or after March 1, 2020. Most products will continue to remain valid until February 28, 2022. Novice licence holders (class G1, G2, M1 or M2) will have until December 31, 2022 to maintain or upgrade their licence. Please visit ontario.ca/RenewalDeadlines for more information on impacted products and deadlines.
As a result, licences that would have expired on or after March 1, 2020, are currently eligible to be renewed online.
Also, licences expired less than 1 year as of March 1, 2020, are also currently eligible to be renewed online until February 28, 2022.
If your driver’s licence was expired or cancelled for more than 1 year prior to March 1, 2020, you cannot renew online. Instead you must:
- visit a DriveTest centre or book an appointment at ServiceOntario Bay and College (Toronto)
- bring original identification that shows your legal name, date of birth and your signature
- pass any required tests such as vision, written or road tests
- pay a $90 fee, plus the cost for any tests you may have to take
In Ontario, you need to renew your driver’s licence card every 5 years. Usually, you will get a renewal notice in the mail or by email about 2 or 3 months before your licence expires. It is illegal to drive with an expired, cancelled or suspended driver’s licence.
Tests you may have to take
If you have a full driver’s licence (class G or GM) that has been expired or cancelled for more than 1 year, you must pass some tests before you can renew. If your licence has been expired or cancelled for:
1-3 years
You must take a vision test for your eyes.
3-10 years
You must take:
- a vision test for your eyes
- a written knowledge test
- two road tests (G1 and G2)
You can:
- book your first road test as soon as you pass your written and eye tests
- book your G2 road test, as soon as you pass your G1 road test
Note: If your licence has been expired for more than 10 years, you must re-apply as a new driver and cannot fast-track. You must serve all mandatory waiting periods.
If you don’t pass your vision test
You can still take part in the rest of the renewal session.
When the session ends, you will get a form to take to your own eye doctor. You will need to take another test there.
You can bring these results to a Driver Improvement Counsellor.
