We update this information every Friday at 12:00 pm Eastern Time with data up to and including the previous Sunday.

About COVID-19 vaccines and vaccination

Vaccination programs, primary series and booster doses

Vaccination programs

  • COVID-19 vaccination began in Canada on December 14, 2020.
  • 7 COVID-19 vaccines are currently approved for use in Canada.
  • The National Advisory Committee on Immunization’s (NACI) recommendations on the use of COVID-19 vaccines can be found in the latest NACI statements.
  • People 5 years and older without contraindications to the vaccine are currently eligible for COVID-19 vaccination.

Primary series

Booster doses

NACI recommends a booster dose of an mRNA vaccine at least 6 months after the primary series is completed for members of the following populations.

  • A booster should be offered to:
    • adults 50 years of age and older
    • adults living in long-term care homes for seniors or other congregate living settings that provide care for seniors
    • people who completed their series with only viral vector vaccines (the AstraZeneca Vaxzevria/COVISHIELD or Janssen COVID-19 vaccines)
    • adults in or from First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities
    • all frontline health care workers who have direct in-person contact with patients
  • A booster may be offered to:
    • adults 18 to 49 years of age
    • adolescents 12 to 17 years of age:
      • with an underlying medical condition at high risk of severe illness due to COVID-19 (including those who are immunocompromised and who received a 3-dose primary series)
      • who are residents of congregate living settings (e.g., shelters, group homes, quarters for migrant workers, correctional facilities)
      • who belong to racialized and/or marginalized communities disproportionately affected by COVID-19

Vaccination coverage by age, sex, and province or territory

A greater percentage of females than males have received a COVID-19 vaccine. Vaccination coverage is highest in adults aged 70 and older.

7 COVID-19 vaccines have been approved for use in Canada.

Canadians have received a variety of vaccine series, the most common of which is a series containing only the Pfizer-BioNTech Comirnaty vaccine.

For more information on the vaccine series listed in Table 3, please refer to their definitions.
