Community coroners call-out

The Nunavut Coroner’s Office is recruiting for community coroners throughout Nunavut communities.

Community Coroners provide service on an as-needed basis and are paid a fee for service, per case. This is not full-time employment. Coroners are responsible under the Coroners Act for conducting thorough, independent investigations of all sudden, unexpected, and unexplained deaths. The coroner’s investigation is to ensure that no death is overlooked, concealed, or ignored and the most important purpose of a Coroner’s investigation is to identify risk factors to prevent similar deaths in the future.

Applicants with previous education or experience in legal, medical or investigative fields preferred. Excellent communication, analytical skills and written skills are required for documentation requirements. Knowledge of Inuit language, communities, culture, land and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit is an asset.

Applicants should have experience working with grieving families in a sensitive, supportive manner with the ability to provide leadership, coordination and provide necessary information.

The Coroner’s Office provides both classroom and practical training for community Coroners. Successful candidates should be willing to travel to the morgue or to a location of a death in any weather and at any time.

For more information please contact Khen Sagadraca, Chief Coroner at 867-975-6562 or ksagadraca@gov.nu.ca.
