Zero-emission vehicles

iZEV

NOTICE: The Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles (iZEV) Program is continuing until March 31, 2025 (or until available funding is exhausted).

Effective April 25, 2022, the iZEV Program's manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) maximums are increasing, which will increase the number of makes and models of eligible vehicles, and the definition of longer-range plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) is now based on electric range in kilometres (km). PHEVs with an electric range of 50 km or more will be eligible for $5,000, and those under this threshold will continue to be eligible for $2,500. As a result of this change, as of April 25, 2022, the following PHEVs, identified with a (*), are now eligible for up to $5,000Footnote 1:

  • 2020, 2021, 2022 Ford *Escape PHEV
  • 2022 Hyundai *Santa Fe PHEV
  • 2022 Hyundai *Tucson PHEV
  • 2022 Kia *Sorento PHEV

Please note that we update the iZEV Program's list of eligible vehicles whenever a new make and/or model is approved. This change also applies to all vehicles listed in the notice that were ordered on or before April 24, 2022 but delivered to the customer on or after April 25, 2022. For dealerships, please select the model with the (*) when submitting a request in the application for purchases / leases and deliveries on or after April 25, 2022. If you have any questions, please contact us at iZEV-iVZE@tc.gc.ca.

Transportation is the second largest source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Canada, accounting for a quarter of Canada's total GHG emissions with almost half of these emissions coming from cars and light trucks. One way to reduce the amount of transportation-related GHG emissions is to put more zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) on the road.

A ZEV is a vehicle that has the potential to produce no tailpipe emissions. They can still have a conventional internal combustion engine but must also be able to operate without using it.

We consider the following vehicles to be ZEVs:

  • battery-electric
  • plug-in hybrid electric
  • hydrogen fuel cell

Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles Program (iZEV)

In order to encourage the adoption of ZEVs by Canadians and Canadian businesses, the Government of Canada launched the Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles (iZEV) Program in May 2019. There are many different makes and models of eligible zero-emission vehicles for purchase or lease that provide consumers with iZEV Program incentives of up to $5,000. For more information on the iZEV Program, please see the “iZEV Program - general information” section below.
