Documenting financial losses for restitution

Restitution is the money the Court orders the offender to pay the victim for losses caused by the crimes the offender committed. Restitution can only be ordered for a victim’s losses that are easy to calculate and up to the time of sentencing. At sentencing, it is the victim’s right to have the Court consider making a restitution order for all offences. If the restitution order is not paid, the victim has the right to have the order entered as a debt in civil court.

The Court must base the restitution order on the victim’s records of actual financial losses caused by the crime.
