What role can universities play in the development of a national strategy for science diplomacy? According to Paul Dufour, a researcher affiliated with the University of Ottawa, investing in science diplomacy is a boon for universities because it invigorates the entire research ecosystem and inspires the next generation of researchers.
Created in partnership with the Embassy of France, the new Research Chair in Science Diplomacy at the University of Ottawa will study science diplomacy and share knowledge on its importance, challenges and issues. It will bring together researchers from a variety of disciplines, ranging from the social sciences to technology and medicine.
A call for researchers to take part in this new research chair has been launched.

Driving impact in Canada’s largest tech park: uOttawa and Ciena’s collaboration in developing AI technologies
The University of Ottawa’s satellite campus in Kanata North is home to deep-rooted and mutually beneficial partnerships with private sector companies. The partnership between Ciena and Shervin Shirmohammadi, a professor in the Faculty of Engineering, illustrates this success.
Established five years ago, their project initially planned to use artificial intelligence (AI) to anticipate network issues and ensure the stability of video services such as YouTube and Netflix. This leading-edge technology plays a key role in preemptively detecting major problems. Their initiative was so successful that Ciena later applied this solution to larger networks.
