Arts Policy

One of the most culturally diverse countries in the world, Canada is rich in artistic expression. Visual, literary and performing artists contribute their talents and energies, enriching communities across the country.

International Days in the Performing Arts

International arts celebrations designated by UNESCO such as World Poetry Day on March 21, World Theatre Day on March 27, International Dance Day on April 29, and International Music Day on october 1st, mark the achievements of arts communities across Canada.

Funding

The Festivals and Special Arts Events component of the Cultural Initiatives Program (CIP) has been replaced by Arts Presentation Canada, a program that will connect Canadians to the arts at the local level. Festivals and Special Arts Events previously eliglible for support under the CIP are able to apply for support under the new program.

The National Arts Training Contribution Program supports national institutions that prepare young Canadians for professional arts careers.

The Canadian Arts and Heritage Sustainability Program supports arts and heritage organizations in adopting measures to improve their financial stability and to develop modern management practices.

The Cultural Spaces Canada Program improves Canada's cultural infrastructure. A particular focus is the repair and upgrading of arts and heritage facilities.

Cultural Capitals of Canada recognizes past achievements of municipalities with an ongoing commitment to arts and culture and provides matching funds for special activities in this domain.

The National Technical Assistance Registry (NTAR), run by the Centre for Cultural Management at the University of Waterloo, is a comprehensive Internet database. It offers a directory of arts consultants and a wide range of business-support services for arts organizations.

Legislation and Policy

The Status of the Artist Act helps improve socio-economic conditions for artists in Canada.

The designation of National Arts Service Organization (NASO) provides not-for-profit arts groups with a tax treatment equivalent to that of charities.

Publications and Evaluation

Read evaluation reports on programs and legislation related to the arts and publications prepared for the Department of Canadian Heritage.
