Canadian Culture Online (CCO) Policy: Metadata Strategy and Development of a Matrix of Metadata Elements
Metadata strategy and development of a metadata matrix
In the spring of 2003, the Canadian Culture Online Branch charged a team of experts from Athabasca University with developing and proposing a strategy on the creation of metadata, as well as proposing a matrix based on a set of metadata elements that can be applied to cultural content on the Internet. The final report was submitted to the Branch in July 2003.
It should be noted that this report does not reflect the policy of Canadian Culture Online nor that of the Department of Canadian Heritage in this regard. Rather, it is meant as a tool for discussion purposes to be used to develop a strategy in this regard. The French terms used in this document are an unofficial translation of recognized English terms, since official terminology did not exist in standards documentation at the time this report was submitted.
Notes
- The focus of this project is strategic. The work on the CCO Metadata Matrix is focused on the identification of the required metadata elements. Only when the decision on the metadata elements comprising the CCO Metadata Matrix has been taken can steps pertaining to development and implementation be undertaken.
The approach developed here at the "strategic" level facilitates an IT-enabled implementation, as well as one which is architecturally structured to be bilingual (with multilingual expandability).
- It is intended that this Report be reviewed by the different types of stakeholders as well as the CCO's Standards, Research and Development Sub-Committee.
