Mining Policy Research Initiative (MPRI)

MPRI was created in 1998 with the aim of promoting multi-stakeholder collaboration in support of applied public interest research, networking, and knowledge dissemination, devoted to ensuring a greater contribution of mining to sustainable and equitable development in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).

Through this corporate project in coordination with other initiatives, IDRC sought to respond to a public concern regarding the potential impacts of the expansion of mining in LAC during the 1990s on the well-being of local communities.

After seven years of operation MPRI has accomplished its objectives and is sufficiently mature to evolve based on its significant outcomes, among which the following stand out:

  • the generation of evidence that responds to key mining issues in the region;
  • the improvement of research capacities and regional networking; and,
  • the recognition of key stakeholders and strengthening of a critical mass of researchers, donors and different institutions.

In this evolution IDRC will turn its attention to specific issues in which it has strong comparative advantages, such as the relationship between mining activity and indigenous peoples, mining technological innovations, as well as closing the loop with research findings on post mining issues.

This site operates primarily in English and Spanish, from the Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean, located in Montevideo, Uruguay. Please, refer to any of these languages for further information.
