Environment and Natural Resource Management

Eliminating poverty and food insecurity requires both natural resources and their successful management by communities, a complex task.

The ENRM program supports research to help:

  1. Ensure secure sources of food and water for the poor in both rural and urban areas by focusing on institutional development, production technology, local resource management, and by appropriate policy choices;
  2. Improve human health and well-being by better managing ecosystems;
  3. Protect local management and control of biodiversity in light of global initiatives and policies governing genetic resources.

  • Urban Poverty and Environment (UPE) Program
    The Urban Poverty and Environment (UPE) Program Initiative supports research and capacity-building towards easing environmental burdens that exacerbate poverty and enhancing access by the urban poor to natural resources for food, water and income security.
  • Ecosystem Approaches to Human Health
    This Program Initiative supports research on the relationship between all components of an ecosystem to define and assess priority problems that affect the health of people and the sustainability of their ecosystem.
  • The International Model Forest Network
    The International Model Forest Network (IMFN) is a voluntary association of partners from around the world working toward the common goal of sustainable management and use of forest-based landscapes.
  • Biodiversity at IDRC
