Objectives
The main objective of the Grants Programme is to promote an active ICT research environment in Africa for issues related to ICT based development applications, policy research and their impacts. The Grants Programme expects to build research capacities, and accelerate the use of ICT for development in the region. It is directed at encouraging original and innovative solutions to specific development problems. Finally the programme aims to build a body of knowledge on the impact of ICTs on the development of African communities. Thematic Scope - The small grants programme will fund research that helps to understand the transformative effects of ICTs on African communities, as well as research into innovative ICT applications to facilitate sustainable development. More specifically research could focus on: Research to enhance understanding and knowledge of the innovative, transformative or dysfunctional effects of ICTs in poverty reduction and human development in Africa
- Research and development into innovative ICT applications, with a clear focus on practical and replicable approaches and techniques
- Research on the community-based impacts of ICTs, with respect to technological appropriateness and adoption
- Research on the effects of ICTs on different development areas such as education, health, peace-building and natural resource management
- Research on policy matters affecting ICTs in the African region, especially where linked to areas such as policy impacts, gender equity, social equity, sustainable communities, and technology diffusion/transfer, and benefits to rural areas

Acacia and Connectivity Africa have announced the winners of the 2004 ICT R&D Small Grants Programme to support research and innovation in ICTs for Africa's development.
