Research and Data

Sound science is the foundation for our national response to climate change. New scientific research is helping us to find new and better ways to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. And, it is helping us develop measures to adapt to the impacts of climate change.

Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) is a recognized leader in energy efficiency; renewable energy; environmentally friendly technologies; forest management; and scientific assessment, monitoring and adaptation planning. In each of these areas, NRCan activities related to climate change have helped to lay the foundation for a national strategy to address climate change.

For example, NRCan´s Renewable Energy Deployment Initiative provides direct financial incentives to encourage businesses, government departments and others to install proven, cost-effective space/water heating and cooling systems that use renewable energy sources.

Similarly, NRCan´s Minerals and Metals Sector is working to reduce GHG emissions by enhancing metal recycling processes and practices, and by assessing alternate process and production processes in those sectors with high GHG-emitting activities.

Natural Resources Canada´s work on climate change supports Canada´s commitment to becoming and remaining a world leader in sustainable development to and one of the smartest nations in the production and use of natural resources. And it supports the government´s commitment to innovation in science and technology to enhance the quality of life for all Canadians.

NRCan has been selected by the Prime Minister to lead Canada in its domestic response to climate change. In energy , forestry , earth sciences, and minerals and metals , NRCan researchers are working to increase our understanding of the science of climate change, the impacts of global warming, and the measures needed to help our natural habitat and human environments adapt.
