Notice to Exporters of American Ginseng

  • The exportation of wild American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) is prohibited from Canada. Only cultivated ginseng may be authorized for export from Canada.


  • The exportation of cultivated American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) always requires a Canadian CITES export permit issued by the Canadian Wildlife Service. The requirement for CITES permits applies only to live ginseng plants and to whole and sliced ginseng roots and parts of ginseng roots.


  • A CITES export permit is not required for exporting ginseng seeds and manufactured parts or derivatives such as powders, pills, extracts, tonics, teas and confectionery.


  • The Canadian Wildlife Service may issue Multiple-Use Export Permits for Cultivated American Ginseng. These permits are restricted to ginseng exporters who frequently export ginseng shipments in a year and/or needs to export these within short time frames.


  • The utilization Multiple Use Ginseng Export Permit is subject to strict conditions and procedures. The permittee will receive an original of a permit. The original (to be retained by the holder) shall be photocopied four (4) times for each shipment as follows: Photocopies 1 and 2 of the permit must be presented to Canada Customs for validation on export ; Photocopy 1 is for Canada Customs' retention while Photocopy 2 is for presentation to foreign Customs on import; Photocopy 3 must be returned to CITES Canada (Canadian Wildlife Service) and Photocopy 4 is for the permit holder's retention.


  • Each time the permit is used, the permittee must indicate the following information on the permit: the name and address of the exporter, the name and address of the consignee at final destination, the number of the shipment and date of shipment, the quantity in grams or kilograms. To be valid, the permit must be signed by the exporter.


  • Copies of the permit become valid only when stamped on export by Canada Customs. Fore more details, please consult the section FAQ.
