To mark the occasion, Environment Canada has designed a quiz to test your knowledge about the ozone layer and its importance.

  2. What part of the atmosphere contains the ozone layer? i.e. - where is most of the ozone?

  3. Where was the ozone hole discovered?

  4. Emissions of CFCs are responsible for the greatest share of ozone layer depletion. From the choices below, pick FOUR (4) uses of CFCs.

  5. By how much has the ozone layer over Canada thinned since 1970?

  6. Some surfaces can reflect a significant amount of UV radiation back onto your skin. Out of the following, which surface reflects the most UV?

  7. You can protect yourself from too much exposure to UV radiation by t aking two of the following precautions. Which two?

  8. UV radiation is only dangerous during summer months.

  9. During which hours should people stay out of the sunlight?

  10. Which of the following health-related concerns are associated with exposure to dangerous UV radiation?

  11. During which season is ozone depletion the most severe in Canada?

  12. In marine ecosystems, UV radiation can damage the tiny single-celled plants known as phytoplankton (which form the basis of the food chain).

  13. Although the production of ozone depleting CFCs is being controlled by the Montreal Protocol, CFCs are still found in certain products in many industrialized countries. Which of the following two may contain CFCs?

  14. Which type of skin cancer is most likely to be fatal?

  15. In April of each year, Environment Canada issues a forecast for the average thickness of the ozone layer over Canada during the spring and summer months. In 1999, the forecast was 1-5% less than normal. The actual value was close to:

  16. In 1999, what was the highest UV Index value recorded in Canada by Environment Canada?
