History

There is no significant history in Canada with the management of NH3 from an air pollution perspective. While recognized as a significant contributor to eutrophication in Europe, NH3 has not been pursued for that reason in Canada. It has received attention recently as a precursor pollutant to the secondary formation of PM2.5. Based on its contribution to PM2.5 formation, gaseous NH3 was declared toxic under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA, 1999) in 2003.
