The air issues associated with SO2 are:

  • Acid Rain (acidification caused by deposition of acid and sulphate transformation products)
  • Smog (SO2 contribution to secondary formation of fine PM)
  • Visibility/Regional Haze (SO2 contribution to secondary formation of fine PM)
  • HAPs (potential adverse health effects from direct exposure to SO2 and/or its acid and sulphate transformation products makes SO2 a HAP in its own right)
