Moving Forward on Climate Change: A Plan for Honouring our Kyoto Commitment

The Government of Canada is very pleased to present to all Canadians Moving Forward on Climate Change: A Plan for Honouring our Kyoto Commitment. This is the first phase of Project Green: a national project to create a healthier environment and a stronger economy by combining the efforts of governments, aboriginal peoples, non-governmental organizations, businesses and all Canadians to build a more sustainable future.

The Kyoto commitment for Canada is one of the greatest and most ambitious in the world. The challenge has been, not just to honour our Kyoto commitment, but to do so in a manner that supports a sustainable environment and a productive economy.

Moving Forward on Climate Change builds on the new measures set out in Budget 2005 including the creation of the Climate Fund ? that will help Canada continue its march towards an environmentally sustainable economy. Moving Forward on Climate Change engages all Canadians in the goal of reaching Canada’s Kyoto commitment by:

  • promoting investments in science and technology so Canada can become a “first mover” in developing and using renewable energy and other green technologies;
  • preserving Canadians’ health and quality of life through cleaner air and greener communities;
  • building lasting partnerships with provinces, territories and municipalities;
  • collaborating with industry and set effective, fair reduction targets;
  • ensuring continuous improvement and value for money by reviewing programs annually, verifying our investments’ results and shifting existing funds to strengthen what works; and
  • helping Canadians achieve a greater level of energy efficiency at home, on the road and at work.

Moving Forward on Climate Change sets out the essential steps necessary to meet our objectives. Its mutually reinforcing policies and initiatives move us forward by harnessing the power of the market, enabling us to honour our Kyoto commitment and prepare us for the world’s next steps on climate change beyond 2012.
