Biotechnology - Natural Resources Canada

Biotechnology is a general term covering a broad spectrum of scientific applications used in many industrial areas. It involves the use of living organisms, or parts of living organisms, to provide new methods of production, make new products and find new ways to improve our quality of life.

Application of biotechnology to our natural resources provides new tools that could:
  • reduce the pressure to harvest old growth forests
  • protect forests from damage by insect pests and diseases
  • produce cleaner fuel to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
  • reduce environmental pollution by cleaning up contaminated sites
  • enhance recovery of valuable metals from low-grade ore
