PCERA

CESC initiated the Pan-Canadian Education Research Agenda (PCERA) in 1997 to bring interprovincial/territorial research issues that are important to ministers of education and training to the attention of the research community in Canada and to promote open discussion of these issues with different partners in education. Since 1999, annual symposia have been held to discuss commissioned research. Research papers and symposium reports are available through GERN.

Through PCERA, CESC funds policy-relevant research on topics of interest to ministers. Researchers interested in working with PCERA should review our Requests for Proposals. Current research activities for PCERA are focused on the following areas:

  • Aboriginal education
  • Literacy
  • Access to postsecondary education

In addition to the three areas listed above, the following research themes have been identified as priorities:

  • Citizenship and social cohesion
  • Healthy schools
  • Learning outcomes
  • Special education / Students with diverse needs
  • Teacher education / Educator training
  • Technology and on-line learning
  • Transitions

Research activities are selected and developed in consultation with ministries and departments of education.

CESC–SSHRC Education Research Initiative

In 2002, CESC entered into a joint initiative with the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) for the promotion of policy-relevant education research. The CESC–SSHRC Education Research Initiative (CSERI) provided $3.2 million over four years for education research in Canada.
