Most countries maintain formal honours systems consisting of three main types of honour: orders, decorations and medals. They reflect the official thanks of a government to those who have served it honourably, often with gallantry or distinction.

Heroes Remember

Veterans Affairs Canada has recorded almost 1,600 hours of video and audio conversations with approximately 75 veterans of the First World War and another 675 Second World War and Korea veterans. These interviews offer rare and personal memories of those individuals who lived the experience, first-hand. Each interview has a story attached and makes up a bigger picture. Each piece makes it possible to tell a nation's history through the eyes of those who served. Now, VAC presents them to you so you can try to understand what these valiant men and women experienced and so that their stories live on forever.

Prose and Poetry

Throughout the year, Veterans Affairs receives wartime poetry from veterans, thoughts on the meaning of remembrance from students and
e-mail from all over the world to thank the brave men and women who gave of themselves during Canada's wartime and continue to give of themselves today. Veterans Affairs invites you to submit your thoughts, write a poem or prose, write a letter to a veteran or simply share what remembrance means to you.

The Remembrance Series

The Canada Remembers Division of Veterans Affairs Canada has updated its series of Remembrance publications to help celebrate, honour, remember and teach our youth about the contributions and sacrifices of those who served our country during times of war, military conflict and peace. Hot off the press are several booklets and a number of educational materials that we plan to share with young people across the country and overseas to help them learn about Canada’s proud military history, including the liberation of the Netherlands. Here, you will find electronic versions of these Remembrance publications.

The Canadian Virtual War Memorial

This site contains a registry of information about the graves and memorials of more than 116,000 Canadians and Newfoundlanders who served valiantly and gave their lives for their country. The site also contains digital images of photographs and personal memorabilia about individual Canadians.
