Weighing Services
Grain receival service
Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) Industry Services
weighing staff at terminal and transfer elevators are
responsible for complete and accurate weighing of grain in all carriers,
including rail cars, at these facilities.
Carriers arrive at elevator
A CGC grain receival service (GRS) weigher:
- Identifies and documents each carrier, creating a basic track
list
- Removes and records documentation attached to a carrier
- Sounds each carrier
- Records empty carriers or compartments
Tracking documents are generated
- Enters carrier identification into a CGC computerized database.
This is matched with information on the carrier’s shipper, shipped
weight and station of origin to produce a final track list.
- Identifies and records damaged, misdirected, empty or partially
unloaded carriers for special handling by elevator
- Prints and transmits grain receival list for use by elevator
staff carrying out the unloading process
Carriers are unloaded
- Uses visual display terminals, remote close circuit television
or both to monitor carriers as they are unloaded, and view grain as
it’s weighed in the elevator’s bulk weighing system
- Confirms total received weight for the carrier against its
shipped weight
- Notes any differences and initiates on-site investigations as
necessary
Weigh data is recorded
- Enters weigh data into a CGC database when unloading is complete
- Keeps original documents on file
The officially recorded unload weight is the basis for railway
freight charges for grain shippers. The GRS process also establishes
grain quantities stored in elevators.
Fees are charged for the GRS.
Differences between reported shipping weight and unload weight of
grain in carriers often result in reviews. The CGC
Dispute Resolution
Settlement process often uses information generated by GRS staff.
