Security and Privacy

Every day the Internet connects more of the world. Consider the facts:

  • People are more reliant than ever on the Internet for aspects of their business and personal lives.
  • Technologies open novel ways for interacting and doing business over the Internet.
  • Application domains such as electronic business have been experiencing explosive growth.
  • Such applications lead to the gathering, storage and exchange of sensitive personal and business information.

These facts necessarily lead to further considerations:

  • How can the confidentiality of information exchange and the privacy of individuals and businesses be assured?
  • How trustworthy are new technologies such as mobile agents?
  • How can the security of the underpinning technologies for new network applications be improved?
  • How can sensitive information be protected?

In response to these issues, the NRC Institute for Information Technology (NRC-IIT) research program in Security and Privacy focuses on addressing the challenges associated with network security and privacy for distributed systems.

Research projects focus more specifically on:

  • network and application security
  • privacy enhancing technologies
  • trust in digital communities
  • secure agent deployment
  • computer supported collaborative work
  • privacy for e-business applications
  • security aspects of wireless and wired electronic commerce
