Filing for IP Protection

Intellectual Property protection includes patents, trade-marks, copyrights, industrial designs, integrated circuit topographies and plant breeders' rights. IP protection allows you to legally exclude others from making, using or selling the protected article without authorization. It applies only in the country where the IP rights have been granted, and for a specified time.

How to Apply
To apply for IP protection, access the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) website at http://cipo.gc.ca This link leaves our Web site.

  • Select the type of protection you want to apply for. Under ‘Getting Started' you will find ‘Guide to' booklets that can be viewed onscreen or downloaded and printed from a pdf file. These booklets will take you through the entire process, step by step. Applications are also available online.
