Protecting Your Idea

BEST TIP
Keep a Logbook
-
During the design stage of your product, keep a bound (not looseleaf) research & development logbook. Sign, date and witness your entries in ink. This way, you have evidence of the steps you took in creating your product.

If you are going to market your idea, intellectual property (IP) rights are essential. IP gives you the right to sell, license or give your product away. Without IP protection, many companies will refuse to negotiate with you.

IP also ensures you have legal recourse if someone takes and develops your idea. This is less likely at the "idea" stage; people tend to copy proven products. But if you are successful, there is a chance you will be infringed upon. And keep in mind it is not normally by large corporations.
