Job Description

Nature of Work
Cashiers operate cash registers, optical price scanners, computers or other equipment to record and accept payment for the purchase of goods, services and admissions. They are employed in stores, restaurants, theatres, business offices and other retail and wholesale establishments.

Main Duties
Cashiers perform some or all of the following duties:
- Establish or identify price of goods, services or admission and tabulate bill using electronic or other cash register, optical price scanner or other equipment
- Receive payment by cash, cheque, credit card or automatic debit
- Wrap or place merchandise in bags
- Provide information to customers
- Calculate total payments received at the end of work shift and reconcile with total sales
- May accept reservations and take-out orders
- May also stock shelves and clean check-out counter area.

The following terms and conditions usually apply to this occupation in P.E.I.:

Most cashiers are required to use computerized cash registers or scanning equipment so completion of secondary school is usually required.

Hours of work tend to be centered on rotating shifts and weekends. There has been a definite trend in recent years to part-time employment (15-40 hours per week) as most employers want the flexibility to call workers for extra shifts which, in some instances provides the equivalent of full-time hours during the week.

Approximately 70 percent of the people employed in this occupation work less than 49 weeks of the year. The balance work year round.

Approximately 1000 people are employed in this occupation in P.E.I. Most of those employed are female. Most of the workers live in the queens County area.

Employment is distributed across a wide range of industries; cashiers are employed in grocery stores, restaurants, theatres, business offices and other retail and wholesale
trade establishments.

The starting wage, for workers with no experience, ranges from a minimum of $6.25 per hour to a maximum of $8.00 per hour. For workers with experience , the starting wage ranges from a minimum of $6.25 to a maximum of $8.00 per hour.

*Note: The minimum rates quoted here were the rates reported by employers at the time of the 2003 Wage Survey. Since that time, the provincial minimum wage rate for all occupations has increased to $6.50 per hour. The minimum rates for this occupation would have been adjusted upwards to meet the current provincial minimum wage rate requirements of $6.50 per hour.

In the short term, the employment potential is good for this occupation. Within the next 3 to 6 months there will be employment opportunities in the P.E.I. labour market for skilled clients in this occupation.

This is a large occupational group in PEI with a large
employer base. As with most large occupations, there will be frequent job openings due to turnover and workers changing jobs.

This occupation is also an excellent source of summer and part-time employment for students.

There is considerable mobility among occupations in the
retail sector therefore opportunities are often available with a number of employers.

The demand for workers in this occupation begins in June and continues until early September. The demand then resumes again in November for the Christmas season.
