October 11, 2006

TORONTO – Lawyer and Senior Executive Taivi Lobu has been re-appointed as a member of the Health Professions Appeal and Review Board (HPARB), Health and Long-Term Care Minister George Smitherman announced today. She has assumed duties as vice-chair to HPARB.

“Ms. Lobu brings a wealth of experience from both her professional career, and her prior membership on the board,” said Smitherman. “The Health Professions Appeal and Review Board and the Colleges that the board oversees will benefit from such a devoted and qualified team member.”

The Health Professions Appeal and Review Board functions as a quasi-judicial adjudicative and regulatory tribunal with jurisdiction respecting the regulatory activities of 22 Colleges governing 23 regulated (human) health professions and veterinarians, and practice privilege decisions of the boards of about 200 public hospitals.

Ms. Lobu previously served on HPARB from 1996 to 2002 as a member and designated Vice-Chair.  She is currently a consultant and writer for Sailor Jones Media.  She was the founding Executive Director of the Ontario Justice Education Network, coordinating hundreds of people from various sectors of the legal community in the development of volunteer programs that now benefit tens of thousands of people annually.  Ms. Lobu has also been the Executive Director of the Community Legal Education Ontario March, and ran her own private legal practice in immigration and refugee law.

“I am honoured to be re-appointed to Health Professions Appeal and Review Board,” said Lobu. “I look forward to continuing my contribution to the important role this board has overseeing the regulatory activities of our province’s health colleges and hospitals.”

Ms. Lobu received a Bachelors of Laws from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1978.

Her community activities have included membership on the Education Committee of the Society for Ontario’s Adjudicator and Regulators as well as contributions to many accesses to justice initiatives.  She has been an instructor at both the Law Society of Upper Canada and Ryerson University and a director of the Public Legal Education Association of Canada.  Ms. Lobu has also contributed to a number of publications including developing and coordinating the 2002 and 2005 editions of ‘Values of the Justice System,’ a curriculum resource in English and French for high school civics and law teachers.
