Lauren Burrows

Who are you?
A host on CBC Radio 3.
Also - in no particular order - a loudmouth, a rascal, a scoundrel and a budding rapper.

Where did you grow up?
Burlington, Ontario.

Where do you live now?
Vancouver, British Columbia.

What do you do at CBC Radio 3?
I talk about the music, the musicians, shows and events… I get to interview folks, crack bad jokes, and drop science.

How did you get into radio?
At a particularly strange crossroads in my life, I went into CiTR 101.9FM (at UBC in Vancouver) and became a volunteer. I wanted to try something different and fun. That led to a show called Rhymes & Reasons, which led to a show called INSOMNITRAX, then into a radio broadcasting program at BCIT, to Rhona at Night, to MOJO, to CKNW to CBC Radio 3.

What is your field of expertise?
Canadian Hip Hop.

Do you make music yourself?
I wrote my first rap recently for a Stinkmitt track I am featured on called "Crime Scene".

What was the first album you bought with your own hard earned money?
Digital Underground "Sex Packets".

What was the first concert you attended?
I saw Sharon, Lois & Bram at Hamilton Place when I was a wee miss. I ran from my seat to dance right in front of the stage. I was having a grand old time, until Bram looked down and gave me a big smiling, bearded wink. He scared the crap out of me. I think I cried when my mom took me to get an autograph after the show.

What is your most shameful/glorious musical moment?
In Montreal, at a Bootsy Collins concert, I was dancing on top of a speaker near the stage, and when Bootsy told the crowd that he was going to hug every person in the place, I was the first in line. That was a powerful hug.

Is there any particular music that gets under your skin?
I'm not so good with new country.

What are the top 3 Canadian songs of all time?
Jeez, how about 3 underrated Canadian songs that I really love? 1) Governor Bolts "Teenage Angst"
2) Stompin' Tom "Tillsonburg"
3) King Cobb Steelie "Luckily I Keep My Feathers Numbered For Just Such An Emergency"

Any guilty musical pleasures I should know about?
Whitney, Annie, the soundtrack to Some Kind of Wonderful.

Why should I trust you?
I'm a good egg.
