Frequently Asked Questions

  1. It's not working. What should I do?
We may be doing some testing which is causing you temporary problems. Also, if the internet is particularly busy that can slow things down.

If this is the first time you've been to the Archives, please take a look at our required plug-ins section to make sure you have all the necessary software you'll need to enjoy our site.

If problems persist, please and include details about your operating system (Windows 2000, Mac OS 10.3, etc.), browser (Internet Explorer 5.0, Netscape 4.7, etc.), connection (dial-up modem, ADSL, cable, etc.), the speed of your connection and any error messages you may have received. The more you tell us the better we'll be able to help you.

  2. Why is the clip not appearing?
Do you have Windows Media Player installed on your computer? Maybe you need to download a more recent version.

We recommend going directly to the Microsoft site:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/default.asp
and downloading the most recent version.

Also, if you have installed a utility (such as Microsoft's PopUp Ad Filter) which prevents annoying ads from popping up on your screen, it could also prevent our site from working properly. We suggest that you register our site in your browser's preference page as a site that is allowed to open pop-ups.

  3. Why is the clip not playing properly?
We may be experiencing temporary difficulties with our server. If you visit our site regularly and are experiencing a problem, please give us a few minutes and come back later. If you are experiencing constant problems, your Internet connection may be too slow. We create our clips so that everyone can enjoy them but if you have dial-up access, you may have problems viewing our video.

  4. Why must I use Windows Media Player?
Windows Media Player must be used to view and listen to all the clips on our site. We chose this player for several reasons, including the fact that it is available for practically every browser and operating system. In addition, using this player is less costly for us to operate our website.

  5. How to access our clips using Linux?
The following programs will let you play our multimedia content on the Linux platform:
We do not have the necessary resources available to offer technical support for these products, but there are many online discussion groups and forums on how to configure these players.

  6. How do I print pages?
At the bottom of all Topic and Clip pages, you'll find a link to let you create a Printer-Friendly Page. Click on this link to create a single text-only page for that Topic or Clip. To print this page, select the Print command from your browser's File menu, and set the printing options you prefer. Close the printer-friendly window when you are finished printing.

  7. How do I send a page to a friend?
At the bottom of all Topic and Clip pages, you'll find a link to let you Send this page to a friend. Click on it and fill in all the fields (comments are optional). The information you provide is not collected by CBC and is used only to send the e-mail message. Press the Send button. (Sometimes this takes a few seconds - only press the Send button once.) The window will close when the message has been sent.

  8. How do I subscribe or unsubscribe to the CBC Archives Newsletter?
Easily. Simply go to the CBC Archives Newsletter page. Type your e-mail address into the first box to receive our Newsletter every Thursday. You can unsubscribe at any time by typing your e-mail address into the second box. Please note that since this is an automated procedure, you'll need to unsubscribe using the same e-mail address you used to subscribe to the Newsletter. Keep your subscription confirmation notice as a reminder.

  9. Will my e-mail address be given away or sold?
Your e-mail address will be used solely for CBC Archives mail. It will never be sold or given away to others. For more information, consult CBC's Privacy Policy.

  10. I'm still having problems/I've found a technical error. How do I contact you?
