Atlas of Coastal Habitats and Fishery Resources

This Atlas has been developed to give a greater number of users access to information on coastal habitats and fishery resources. It is flexible, functional and easy to use, for novice and expert alike. This interactive tool is the fruit of collective efforts to pool information from databases administered by Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Société de la faune et des parcs du Québec.

Areas covered
The Atlas provides information on three areas in the Quebec Region:

  • The freshwater part of the St. Lawrence, that is the fluvial section and the fluvial estuary
  • The saltwater part of the St. Lawrence River, namely. the St. Lawrence
Estuary, the Saguenay Fjord and Quebec's Gulf of St. Lawrence coastline that is Gaspé Peninsula, Magdalen Islands and the North Shore
  • Northern Quebec, that is the eastern part of James Bay and Hudson Bay,
southern Hudson Strait and Ungava Bay.

Information compiled
The Atlas is a compilation of layers of geographic data. It features
three categories of data:

  • Framework data layers such as the coastline, the outline of
    watercourses and roads, etc.
  • Thematic data layers describing the spatio-temporal distribution
of the main essential habitats of invertebrates, fish and marine
mammals. A list of topics subdivided into information classes
is provided for each of these themes.
  • The Atlas also includes metadata consisting of compilations of basic
information on each information layer in the Atlas. The metadata
convey information on data significance, structure and production.
Users can access them via the Discovery Portal of the Canadian
    Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI):
