Seafood is the largest single food commodity exported by Canada. Canada is the fifth largest seafood exporter in the world valued at about $5 billion annually.
Aquaculture is a relatively new commercial activity in Canada and in many other parts of the world, but already it occupies a significant position in the seafood production sector. Cultured fish and seafood production was valued at $586 million in 2003, comprising approximately one fifth of all Canadian fisheries production.
The top five farmed species by production are: Atlantic salmon, Blue mussels, Chinook salmon, Pacific oysters and American oysters.
Canada’s top three markets for farmed Atlantic salmon are the United States, Japan and Taiwan. Canada’s top three markets for Blue mussels are: the United States, Europe and Japan.
