- Noakes, Beamish and Kent win R. E. Foerster Award for 2000 -
The recipients of the 2000 R. E. Foerster Award are D.J.
Noakes, R.J. Beamish, and M.L. Kent for their paper: Noakes,
D.J., Beamish, R.J., and Kent, M.L. 2000. On the decline of
Pacific salmon and speculative links to salmon farming in
British Columbia. Aquaculture 183: 363-386. This award is
given annually for the best fisheries science paper published
by Pacific Region Science staff, Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
The 2000 award committee chaired by Dr. Z. (Bob) Kabata
included Drs. Jake Rice, Jim Stewart, Neil Bourne, and Ed
Donaldson. The Committee reviewed 47 papers published in
2000.

- Arctic Charr
Aquaculture Review.
The review was completed by visiting as many Arctic charr
farms as possible including operations in Nova Scotia, New
Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Quebec and the Yukon. As
well, questionnaires were given to all farmers visited and
circulated to other producers not personally visited. The
survey asked the producers to identify the following, each of
which is covered in a separate section in the final report:
The strengths, weaknesses, opportunities & threats (S.W.O.T.
Analysis) of the industry, the critical issues impeding the
development of the industry, and recommendations for an action
plan to advance the industry.
