Selected Results for the Great Lakes Fishery

2000

In May, 2000, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, in cooperation with all federal, provincial and territorial licensing agencies, undertook the 2000 Survey of Recreational Fishing in Canada .

Information on angling in Canada has been collected at five-year intervals since 1975. Since 1980, the Great Lakes Fishery Commission has requested that information specific to the Great Lakes system be developed in order that they could determine the economic importance of this fishery. This request was made of both the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the Fish and Wildlife Service of the United States Department of the Interior since national surveys were being conducted by both agencies.

The surveys are no longer carried out in the same year. Canada has maintained the original five-year interval whereas in the U.S. , the survey is conducted to coincide with census years.

Data has been generated to reflect activity by both residents of the province and visitors who fished in Ontario and, more specifically, on the Great Lakes system.
